Cincinnati Enquirer: Charter Amendment Deserves to Fail

Enquirer calls ‘Poison Pill’ Amendment “Deceptive, Dangerous, Divisive”

(August 8, 2009) - Cincinnatians for Progress applauds the Cincinnati Enquirer for its editorial revealing the truth about the anti-rail charter amendment that will likely be on the ballot in November. The Enquirer editorialized the amendment as:

- Deceptive in its language and intent
- Dangerous to representative democracy
- Divisive for our community

Rob Richardson, Cincinnatians for Progress co-chair, commented “We agree with the Enquirer's analysis that the anti-rail charter amendment ‘...is deceptive in its language and intent, dangerous to our representative democracy, and divisive for our community.” The Enquirer also pointed to this disheartening fact: the COAST and NAACP anti-rail campaign is ‘...tapping into deep-seated, long-standing resentments based on race, class and neighborhoods...’ to divide our community to gain support for their amendment.’ Cincinnati has made much progress in recent years and we should not support, or accept, divisive rhetoric.”

“The Enquirer studied both sides of this issue and found the ‘lawyerly weasel-wording’ in this amendment ‘deceptive’ and ‘it deserves to fail.’ We couldn't agree more,” said Joe Sprengard, Jr. Cincinnatians for Progress co-chair. “Their conclusion was on point - ‘three D's that amount to an F.”

This was a pretty eye-opening editorial, and was the reason I actively looked for this website and joined CFP tonight.

It seems to me to be a bad strategy for CFP to place so much emphasis on 'Californication'. Most people like California; many even have a sort of utopian image of it. Trying to create a negative image of this ammendment by saying it will make Cincinnati more like California is like saying
"watch out, or you'll make the Bengals just like the New England Patriots".

Even the song "Californication" is likable.

More importantly, this measure will NOT make Cincinnati like California. California is a liberal Democratic state with a disprportionate number of idealists and would-be social activists. Measures put to vote have a good chance to pass. On the other hand, Cincinnati can be conservative almost to the extreme, a haven for people who think like COAST. Passing this ammendment in Cincinnati would likely forever doom projects which would easily pass in California.

CFP needs to come up with some basis for comparison that people can relate to with the appropriate negative emotions and connotations that this ammendment should arouse in anybody who really cares about seeing Cincinnati become a better city for all of it's citizens.
